Optimizing Nutrition & Health with Supplements
While it is usually best to get your essential nutrients for optimal health from a wholefood-based diet of organic vegetables, fruits, whole grains, wild-caught fish, etc., there are situations where nutritional supplementation can be beneficial. Examples include cases of specific nutrient deficiencies, genetic variances (e.g. MTHFR), when optimizing for athletic performance or immune resiliency, balancing hormones, gut health restoration, detoxification and the list continues.
The topic of supplements, their value and efficacy can be controversial. There are many varied opinions. Even the research continues to evolve as nutritional science advances.
Ultimately, whether to use supplements or not is an individual preference, which should be guided by appropriate functional nutrition and/or medical professionals.
Just one example - In her bestselling book, The Wahls Protocol; Terry Wahls, MD addresses the following supplements at length as well as how / when they should be used (or not): Vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids & Gamma-Linoleic Acid), B vitamins, coenzyme Q, algae, digestive enzymes, L-methylfolate, dietary fiber, zinc, iron, copper, lipoic acid, carnitine, creatine, NAC (N-acetylcysteine), turmeric, MSM and others.
According to a recent article printed in USA Today, “Nearly 10% of Americans have a nutritional deficiency. These are the most common: Vitamin B6, iron, vitamin D, iodine, vitamin C, vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acid, folate, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin E and copper (among people with untreated celiac disease).”
